Lumsden

The halfway junction of the Around the Mountains Cycle Trail, Lumsden has the dubious honour of being the scene of New Zealand’s biggest bank robbery.
Two shunting locomotives, originally from the Waihi Goldfields in the North Island, are proudly displayed and reflect the town’s history as a railway junction. Located on the western Waimea Plains about 80km north of Invercargill, in the early days of European settlement it was known as The Elbow.
Lumsden has café, restaurant and accommodation options, as well as a 24-hour laundromat, camping ground, a community swimming pool, recreational reserve, fire station, postal shop and petrol station.
