Athol

Reputed to be home to the world’s best brown trout fishing on the nearby Mataura River, Athol lies on a small plain surrounded by mountains, including Mid Dome (1478m) to the south and Flagstaff (1037m) to the east.
With a population of 110, farming is the prominent industry.
Athol has many Maori caves scattered around the area, and its first accommodation house was established in early 1863 by runholder Joseph Rogers. Former Athol resident the Honourable Adam Hamilton was the first leader of the New Zealand National Party.
Athol offers two cafes, accommodation options, a ChargeNet charging station and a church.
