Around the Mountains

TAKA RA HAKA – WHERE THE SUN DANCES ON MOUNTAIN TOPS

The rivers and lakes of Southland were traditional pathways and hunting grounds of the Maori, and the location is known as Taka Ra Haka – where the sun dances on the mountain tops at the end of the day.

SO MANY LANDSCAPES

From lakeside, high country, small towns, retired rail lines, national parks and operating farms the trail circumnavigates the Eyre Mountains. The commute across Lake Wakatipu can be made on historic TSS Earnslaw or the Spirit of Queenstown after enjoying Queenstown, then enter a different world around the Eyre Mountains.

SOUTHERN FOLK

Mix it up with the local farming community, their traditions and local delicacies. Enjoy a cold beverage at the end of the day at one of the traditional taverns on route, and rest up with a local in variety of accommodation options.

WHERE NATURE MEETS FARM

The boundary between the home of native flora and fauna (particularly birds and insects) and the cultivated agricultural lands, with harvests from land such as dairy, beef, venison, wool and lamb. The rivers are world famous for flying fishing opportunities.

A TRAIL FOR ALL

A manicured trail through the back country of New Zealand, with a focus on accessibility and rider support. Custom bridges span the many rivers and high grade trails make for a comfortable ride, with Sherpa support and ebikes as options.
